  • III.Literature as a Platform in Education for Sustainable Development

"Literature is the reflection of human experience". This quote is true. The human experience or a memory is different through everyone else eyes. Many people believe that literature comes from the writers imagination and that literature is just words do not mean anything to anybody; but, literature is a reflection of the human experiences because it allows people to look back on their memories like the author Harper Lee.

The purpose of teaching literature in schools has often been debated especially during the recent concern of our "failing educational system" and the importance placed on high stakes tests. However, teaching literature not only improves reading fluency through the expansion of vocabulary, but also increases students' reading comprehension skills. Comprehension skills not only include retelling main events, but also include the ability to identify the author's choice or words, central themes, character development, symbolism, irony, etc.
Including literature expecially classical literature supports the idea of teaching a truly integrated curriculum.  For example, classical literature can be used to teach history and language arts.  One does not need to have a specific course designed solely around reading classical literature.  It can be used in history and writing classes to encourage higher level thinking skills.

Today it seems that students need to not only learn from literature, but also understand how it applies to their lives.  Instead of having students read the whole of a "literary classics", teachers should begin to incorporate newer texts and excerpts from the classics can teach them the same lessons is becoming vitally important.  Students need to feel they can relate to what they’re reading; otherwise English and literature teachers will find themselves losing their audiences. Turning students off from literature is doing them a disservice, teachers need to ensure that their students cannot only read but can analyze and question the texts they are reading.

    IV.Reflection in Literature

    IV.Reflection in Literature

    Haiku poem

    Green grass in April
Birds begin to sing in trees
    Children playing outside

    Butterflies hatch.
Bees drink the juice from flowers.
    Bees fly everywhere.

    FROGS jumping around
    Frogs hopping away from snakes
    Frogs doing cool tricks

    Birds chirping a lot
    People singing all the time
    Birds are going south!

    I see bees fly
    Nature Flowers are blooming.
    Birds build their new homes.

    Birds and bees flying
Soft blades of grass on my feet
    New flowers blooming

    The bees are buzzing.
    Beautiful flowers are here.
    The flowers smell good.

    Baseball is starting
    Spring is finally here yes!
    The bees are buzzing.

    Flowers are blooming
    Bursts of colors come alive
    Fragrant smells around us!

    Spring, nature wakes up
    Flowers and trees are blooming
    Animals are coming out!

    Tulips are blooming
Sun is out and shinning bright
    Green grass is growing

    Birds chirping their song,
Building their nest for their home
    Getting ready for spring!

    Beaches are open
Strong waves are hitting the rocks
    Kids are coming back.

    I hear birds singing.
    Birds are chirping everywhere.
    Their wings touch the sky.

    Nature blooms, It's spring
    Flowers awake from their nap
    Cool breezes on my face!

    Leaves flying around
The leaves are touching my head
    Smell the fresh crisp air

    Butterflies are flying
Their orange wings touch the sun
    They perch on fresh leaves!

    No school in summer.
    Swimming in the cool water.
    Sipping lemonade.

    Spring flowers burst their color.
Birds fly back to their North home.
    Animals hatching.

    In spring flowers bloom.
    In spring animals come out.
    Best of all...it's warm!

    Children are playing
    Flowers blooming from the sun
    Nature feeling good!

    Bees buzzing, it's spring
Nature wakes up from its nap
    While the wind blew softly.
    An old silent pond...
A frog jumps into the pond,
    Splash! Silence again.

    Autumn moonlight—
    A worm digs silently
    Into the chestnut.

    Lightning flash—
    What I thought were faces
    Are plumes of pampas?

    Everything I touch
    With tenderness, alas,
    Pricks like a bramble.

    Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
    In a bed of brown.

    Its cold—and I wait
    For someone to shelter me
    And take me from here.

    I hear crackling
Crunch, of today’s new found day
    And know it won’t last

    Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
    In a bed of brown.

    A cricket disturbed
The sleeping child; on the porch
    A man smoked and smiled.

    I'm turning over
Look out and give me room there
    You cricket, you.

    We are but flyspecks

on that window pane of life
    the window cleaner

    Chicken or the egg?

    No Egg, No Chicken, Dummies
    it’s a no-brainer!

    Like medieval knights

    Armor clad, in fields battle
    to reap victory

    After summer's rain

    God's promise is remembered
    glorious rainbow

    People united

    to secure their liberty
    Out of many, one

    Ire's crest: David's Harp

    Spring words 'Aaron Forever'
    Covenants of God

    Humbling the Irish

    God's creation of whiskey
    Preventing world rule

    Patrick of England

    Preserving Erin's blood line
    Drove out the serpents

    Fighting for freedom,

    fall of a valiant soldier
    resting in the Lord

    'My sheep hear my voice'

Christ did say, 'and I know them
    and they follow me'

    New immigrant...

    face-to-face
    with falling snow

    Over the wintry
    forest, winds howl in  rage
    with no leaves to blow.

    Butterfly flying
    Flying up into the sky
    Going far away

    Keeping in my heart
    A promise until the end
    Stay here forever

    Cuddling on the bench
    Enjoying the scenery
    Ah! Priceless moment!

    Holding her soft hands
    Walking at the lovely shore
    Moments I treasured

    Fireworks light the sky
    Great moments to express love
    Forever  you'll stay

    Lovebirds in the cage
    The couple loves each other
    Romantic indeed!
